I guess it’s become less important in the last 100 years where I think artists have become de-skilled in lots of ways.Īn abstractionist wouldn’t need to know anything about anatomy. It is all about how the muscles look superficially, not about internal organs or deep muscles that don’t have an effect on the surface.

These apps are much the same except that you get to see the muscles in 3D. There are a few large books about it, specifically dedicated to artists, and it is/was taught in ateliers. Don’t know about the others.Īrtists have been studying muscular anatomy ever since there were artists.

The cost is comparable, and I really like both these programs and would recommend either of them, but my preference is Essental Anatomy for its ease of use.Įssential Anatomy for Windows 8 is on special for the next 3 days for 40% ($10). I also think it is more accurate than Muscle Premium, at least in a couple of areas that I noticed, The app also comes with other parts of the anatomy that are probably not useful to an artist, such as internal organs and the lymphatic system etc., but these can be turned off with single clicks. This is possible with Muscle Premium, but it is a long winded process. One click and you are back to the render that you had before you clicked “Isolate”. This render can be rotated in any direction in 3D. One huge advantage over Muscle Premium is that you can select “Isolate”, and everything will disappear except for the selected muscle and the skeleton. There are markings on the bones, as well as pins, showing muscle insertions and origins.Īll in all, this is an excellent program, although I find it’s navigation system quite clunky, and there are a few bugs.Įssential Anatomy runs more smoothly on my system, and the navigation is very very nice. It has animations of bone and muscle movement. It can run on older versions of Windows than version 8.

It is available for Windows and Mac OS, and its advantages over Essential Anatomy are You can rotate it in 3D, and strip away any muscles or bones.įirst I’d like to discuss it’s closest competition, Visual Body’s Muscle Premium. This is an excellent app for artists studying human anatomy, made for Windows 8, Mac OS, iPad, iPhone and Android.
